The Protestant Reformation was more than just Martin Luther nailing his 95 Thesis to the church door in 1517. It was a whole movement throughout Western Europe that set in place the structures and beliefs that would define the continent in the modern era.
Most of it stemmed from the widespread corruption and sale of indulgences. During the early Renaissance in Italy, speculative inquiry deprived the church of it s monopoly on
Several people felt as Luther did beginning with 14 th century English reformer John Wycliffe. Switzerland’s movement was led by Huldreich Zwingle in1518 for his vigorous
denunciation of the sale of indulgences.
As did Luther and other reformers, he considered the Bible the sole source of moral
French Protestant theologian John Calvin fled to Geneva and continued the reformation.
In 1560, under the leadership of John Knox, an ardent disciple of Calvin, established
Calvinism as the religion of Scotland.
Then there was Henry the VIII. He wanted a divorce and the pope would not give him one. So he started the Church of England. But of all these noted reformers Luther did more to bring it to light with many publications and pamphlets.
During the summer we will be having a hymn of the month –singing music that is less familiar, singing global music to connect our community to those around the globe.
